Charlottesville, VA, 2009 – A projection artwork created by Small Design Firm in the lobby of the new visitor center at Monticello. The stone floor has inlaid words that pertain to Thomas Jefferson's life and works, such as 'Liberty', 'Slavery', and 'Science'. When a visitor steps on any of the words on the ground, letters appear and spill out around their feet. The letters travel around the room, climb a wall, and then form into a quote from Jefferson that references the word that was stepped on.
I developed the vision system that tracks the museum visitors as they walk around the room. Eric Gunther and Lauren McCarthy wrote the animation software.
This project was a collaboration between Small Design Firm, Staples and Charles, and Avitecture.
